Main Task- Evauation
Our film opening used some of the common codes and conventions of film openings, for example we used the opening two minutes to introduce the central protaganist of the film `Matt`. However, our film opening also went against some the of the elements you would expect to happen in a film opening. For example, our genre was slasher and yet we had no element of obvious` violence in our opening two minutes.
Our media product attempts to represent several social group. The plan, if our film was ever made into a feature length picture would have been to represent teens in a good light to attempt to combat the unjust `bad press` that our group felt that young people are subjected to by the tabloids in Britain. Also, following the codes and conventions of the slasher movie genre we had to make the police look incompetant and stupid.
The sort of institution that would distribute our product would be an organisation such as `screen Yorkshire`. A local institution specialising in low budget movies with an emerging cast such as ours.
The audience for our media product is a male 15-34 year old who's into heavy rock music. Clearly this is quite a narrow target audience so there would have to be cross-over appeal to make our film viable as a commercial proposition. We think that our cross-over appeal comes from both the older end of the 15-34 bracket moving closer to 40. Also, as our film developes we invisage a lead female role, this would create cross-over appeal to a female audience. This character would also lead into the male gaze theory.
I have learnt an awful lot about different technologies as I have gone throught the process of constructing this media product. As far as computers goes I am not the most talented person in the world, so it took me a while to get used to the new software, perhaps more than most members of the group. However, I know feel a compitant user of both imovie and garage band. Obviously, we used imovie to edit the final cut of our film. We used garage band to create the music for our film. We created the music ourselves for two reasons. First, we felt it showed more initiativethan if we had jus found a copyright free source on the web and secondly, we were able to finely tune the music so it fit in better with the action that was taking place on screen.
From the preliminary task to the final cut there is a vast difference in quality. Shot variation, lighting, sound, editing all these factors improved enourmously. These diffences came about through familiarity with the cameras and the software, also through detailed research into our genre and target audience which I have demonstarated in this blog.
Our initial final cut was a marked improvemtent from our initial rough cut, however, it could still be improved. The main diffences between our initial final cut and our finished final cut was to increase the prominance of the knife in our film and also to include a busty blonde as with most slasher movies of this type. These differences were brought about through constructive auidience feedback.
We also veared away from the use of garage band music and found an appropriate track from a copyright free source. We did this for two reasons, first, because we didn't feel that either me or Alex were good enough at using garage band to utilise it's full pottential. Secondly, we thought the copyright free track suited our genre better and improved the overall effect of the filmon the audience.
